Why your breaker keeps tripping
A breaker that keeps tripping is not broken. It is doing the one job it has. The useful question is which of three things it is protecting you from, because one of them you can clear in five minutes and two of them you should not touch.
What a tripping breaker is telling you
A breaker is a deliberate weak point. Every circuit in your house runs on wire sized to carry a certain amount of current, and the breaker is set to give up before that wire does. When it trips, it has decided that something on that circuit crossed the line it was installed to hold.
So a breaker that trips is working. A breaker that never trips on a circuit with a real problem is the genuinely dangerous one, which is why the hazard-panel brands further down this page matter so much.
There are three reasons yours is tripping, and they are not equally serious. An overload means you are simply asking for more than the circuit is rated to give. A short circuit or a ground fault means current is finding a path it was never meant to take. The first is a housekeeping problem. The other two are electrical faults.
Which of the three causes is yours
The tell is when it trips. An overload takes time to build, because the breaker allows a brief surge and trips on sustained current. A short circuit or ground fault is immediate, because the fault exists the instant power reaches it. Work the check below, or read the same logic in the table under it.

If it is an overload
This is the good outcome, and you can usually sort it out yourself without touching anything but a plug and the breaker handle.
Find the heaviest thing on that circuit
Space heaters, window air conditioners, hair dryers, microwaves, toaster ovens, and window-unit heat pumps are the usual culprits. Any one of them can use most of a 15-amp circuit by itself.
Move it to a different room, not just a different outlet
Outlets in the same room are often on the same circuit, so moving a heater across the room changes nothing. Moving it to a different room, ideally on a different wall of the house, is what actually redistributes the load.
Reset the breaker fully
Push it firmly all the way to OFF first, then back to ON. A breaker that tripped sits in a middle position, and pushing straight from there to ON often will not latch.

If you have to keep rearranging appliances to keep the power on, the circuit is not the problem so much as the count of circuits. That is a panel and branch-circuit conversation, and it is very common in Santa Clara County homes built before 1980.
The one repair that makes this genuinely dangerous
Do not replace a tripping breaker with a higher-amp one. It is the most common homeowner fix for this problem and it removes the protection entirely.
The wire inside your wall is sized for the breaker that is there now. A 20-amp breaker on wire rated for 15 amps means the wire can now run hotter than its insulation was built for, and the breaker will no longer stop it. The tripping goes away, which feels like a fix, and the actual hazard moves inside the wall where nobody can see it. If a circuit needs more capacity, it needs a new circuit.
If it trips instantly
An immediate trip means the fault is already there, waiting, and the breaker finds it the moment you restore power. Two things cause it.
A short circuit is a hot conductor touching a neutral. It draws enormous current instantly and the breaker reacts hard. Damaged cord insulation, a nail or screw driven through a cable during a remodel, a failed appliance, and rodent damage are the usual sources.
A ground fault is a hot conductor touching ground, or a metal box or enclosure. Moisture is the most common cause in Santa Clara County, especially in outdoor boxes, garages, and crawlspaces after winter rain.
Both need the circuit isolated and tested section by section to find where the path went wrong. That means working inside the panel and in junction boxes, and it is one of the most common calls our team runs across the county.
The panels that fail the other way
Everything above assumes your breaker trips when it should. Two panel brands common in Santa Clara County homes are documented to fail in the opposite direction: Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco. Their breakers can fail to trip under a fault, and can fuse to the bus bar so that the handle moves while the circuit stays live.
That inverts the advice on this page. With those panels, a breaker that trips is arguably the better sign, because it is still doing something. The concerning case is the one that never trips no matter what the circuit is doing. If your panel carries either name, replacement is the safe path regardless of what is tripping, and many home insurers now flag or decline coverage on them.

- A breaker that will not stay on no matter what you unplug
- Any Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel that has started tripping or feels warm

Common questions
Can I just put in a bigger breaker to stop it tripping?
No, and this is the one thing on this page we would ask you to take seriously. The wire inside your wall is sized for the breaker that is there now. A bigger breaker lets more current through that same wire than it was ever rated to carry, and the breaker will no longer trip before the wire overheats. That is how a nuisance turns into a fire inside a wall where nobody can see it. If a circuit needs more capacity, it needs a new circuit sized for the job.
How many times is it safe to reset a tripping breaker?
Once or twice while you check the simple causes is reasonable. If it keeps tripping, stop. Each reset pushes current back into whatever the breaker is protecting you from, and if that is a short circuit or a ground fault rather than an overload, you are repeating the fault instead of testing it.
Why does it trip only when I run the microwave and something else?
That is the textbook overload pattern. Two large appliances on one circuit can sit fine individually and exceed the rating together. Kitchens are the most common place for this, which is why modern code requires multiple dedicated small-appliance circuits in a kitchen. Older kitchens often have far fewer.
The breaker trips with everything unplugged. What now?
That rules out an overload, because there is nothing drawing current. What is left is a fault in the wiring, a hardwired device on the circuit that has failed (a light fixture, a bathroom fan, a hardwired smoke detector), or a breaker that has worn out. All three mean working inside the panel, and that is where our team takes over.
Do breakers wear out?
Yes. A breaker is a mechanical device and it has a service life. One that trips at well under its rated load, or that feels loose or will not latch firmly, is often simply worn. Replacing a breaker is inexpensive, but it means opening the panel, and matching the breaker to the panel brand matters more than people expect.
My AFCI breaker trips but nothing seems wrong. Is that normal?
Arc-fault breakers watch for the electrical signature of arcing, and some appliances with motors or older switching electronics can look like arcing to them. That said, we do not recommend assuming a nuisance trip. An AFCI tripping repeatedly is worth having someone confirm it is the appliance and not real arcing in a connection, which is exactly the hazard AFCIs exist to catch.
