You smell burning near an outlet
Unlike most electrical symptoms, this one is not an early warning. A smell means something already reached the temperature where it breaks down. So this guide starts with what to do rather than what it means, and the explanation comes after.

If you see smoke, flame, or sparks, leave and call 911
That is a fire, and nothing else on this page applies until the fire department has been. Get everyone out first and call from outside. Do not look for the source, and never put water on anything electrical, because water conducts and turns a contained fire into a shock hazard as well.
Otherwise, switch off the circuit at the panel
If you know which breaker feeds the outlet or room, switch it off. If you do not, switch off the main. Opening the panel door and moving a breaker handle is normal homeowner activity. Taking the cover off the panel is not, and you do not need to for this.
Unplug what you can reach safely, and leave it unplugged
If a specific device is involved and the plug is cool enough to touch, pull it. If the plug or the outlet is hot, leave it and rely on the breaker instead. Do not plug anything back in to test whether the smell comes back, because that repeats whatever caused it.
Leave it off and call
The most common mistake at this point is restoring power once the smell fades, because it feels resolved. It is not. Leave that circuit dead until someone has actually looked at what made the smell, and call us the same day.
How urgent is yours
Burning smells cover a real range, from dust on a heater element to a connection that is actively cooking inside a wall. Two questions sort almost all of it, and neither is about electrical knowledge: can you see anything and can you feel any heat. Only after both come back clean is it worth asking where the smell is coming from.

Switching a breaker off at the panel door is normal homeowner territory, and with a burning smell it is usually the right move. Removing the panel cover or opening an outlet is not, and nothing on this page asks you to. This is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

What the different smells mean
People are much better at describing this than they expect to be, and the description is genuinely diagnostic.
Hot plastic or melting is the most direct one. The body of an outlet or switch, and the insulation on the conductors behind it, are plastics with a temperature they start breaking down at. Smelling that means something reached it. The heat almost always comes from a connection that is no longer tight, because a loose connection makes current work harder to cross the gap and that effort comes out as heat in a very small space.
A fishy or urine-like smell catches people out completely, and plenty of homeowners hunt for a dead animal in a wall before they think of the outlet. It is a real and recognised signature: the vinyl and thermoset plastics used in electrical components give off compounds when overheated that the nose reads exactly that way. Near an outlet, a switch, or the panel, treat it as electrical from the start.
A sharp, clean smell like chlorine, or like the air after a thunderstorm, is ozone. Arcing produces it. That means current is jumping a gap rather than flowing through contact, which is both a source of intense localised heat and the specific mechanism behind a great many electrical fires.
Hot dust is the odd one out, and it is covered further down, because it is the one that is usually nothing.
If the smell went away
A smell that faded is not a problem that resolved
This is the single most common way this situation goes wrong. The smell appears, it is alarming, and then over an hour or two it fades. Nothing catches fire. Everything looks normal. The circuit gets switched back on and life moves on.
What actually happened is that whatever was cooking stopped cooking, almost always because the load came off that circuit or a connection shifted slightly. The loose connection did not repair itself, because connections have no mechanism for doing that. Meanwhile the insulation, the terminal, and the device body are now heat damaged, which makes the connection worse than it was before it smelled.
So the fade is not a recovery. It is the same fault, degraded a bit further, waiting for the next time that circuit carries a real load. Leave the breaker off and have it looked at, even though it currently smells like nothing at all.
The one case that is usually nothing
Dust burning off a heating element is a real cause and a common one, and it would be dishonest to leave it out just because it is the reassuring answer.
Over a summer, dust settles on the elements of a wall heater, a baseboard heater, or a furnace, and on the housing of a light fixture. The first time it runs, that dust burns off and produces a genuine burning smell that can be strong enough to worry anyone. Nothing is wrong. It is the same thing an oven does on its first use.
Three limits decide whether that explanation actually applies to you:
- It fades. Ten or fifteen minutes of running, not hours, and it should be clearly weakening the whole time rather than holding steady
- It does not come back. The second and third time you run that heater it should smell of nothing. A smell that returns every time is not dust
- It smells like hot dust, not plastic. Dusty and dry, closer to a radiator than a melting cable. Anything sharp, chemical, fishy, or plastic is a different problem wearing the same coat
Fail any one of those three and stop calling it dust. Go back to the triage above and treat it as the wiring case.
Why this is not like a flicker
It is worth being explicit about why this page is more insistent than the others in this series, because the difference is real rather than a matter of tone.
A flickering light is an early warning. A connection has started to loosen, the light stutters, and nothing has been damaged yet. A breaker tripping is better still: that is protection doing precisely its job, interrupting a problem before it becomes one. Both give you time.
A burning smell is different in kind. For an odour to exist at all, a material had to reach the temperature where it breaks down and releases those compounds. That has already happened by the time you notice it. You are not being warned about a future problem, you are smelling the evidence of one that has occurred, and the same connection is still in place carrying the same current.
There is one more reason for urgency worth knowing about. Every reassurance above quietly assumes your breakers work. Two panel brands common in Santa Clara County homes, Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco, are documented to fail without tripping, so heat can build on a circuit with no breaker ever reacting to it. If your panel carries either name, a burning smell deserves less patience, not more.

Common questions
The burning smell went away on its own. Is it fine now?
No, and this is the most important question on the page. A smell fading means the material that was cooking has stopped cooking, usually because the load came off or the connection shifted. It does not mean the loose connection repaired itself, because connections do not do that. What actually happened is that something got hot enough to break down, and it is still sitting there, degraded, waiting for the next time that circuit carries a decent load. A smell that faded is a warning you were given once and may not be given again.
Should I call 911 or an electrician?
Smoke, flame, or sparks means 911, from outside, after everyone is out. A burning smell with no visible fire is normally an electrician, and the first move is switching that circuit off at the panel. In between there is a real grey area, and it is worth saying plainly: if the smell is strong, or you cannot work out where it is coming from, calling the fire department is a reasonable thing to do. They respond to electrical odour calls routinely and would far rather check a wall that turns out fine.
Why does it smell like fish when nothing fishy is anywhere near it?
Because that is genuinely what overheating electrical components smell like. The vinyl and thermoset plastics used in outlets, switches, and wire insulation release compounds when they get hot that read to the human nose as fish or stale urine. It is a recognised signature rather than a coincidence, and people usually spend a while hunting for a dead animal before landing on the outlet. If you smell it near an outlet, a switch, or the panel, treat it as an electrical problem straight away.
Can I just replace the outlet myself and be done with it?
The risk is that swapping the outlet hides the problem instead of fixing it. In most of these cases the receptacle is not the cause, it is the casualty: a connection behind it worked loose, heat built up at that point, and the outlet is simply where the damage showed. Fit a new outlet onto that same loose connection and you get a clean faceplate over an unchanged fault. The connection has to be found and corrected, and the heat damage traced to see how far it went into the box and the cable behind it.
How long do I have before this becomes a fire?
Nobody can answer that honestly, and be wary of anyone who does. It depends on how loose the connection is, how much current that circuit carries, what the box is made of, and what is packed around it. It might sit for months without incident and it might not last the night, and there is no way to tell which from the outside. That uncertainty is precisely the reason the advice is to kill the circuit rather than to monitor the situation. With the circuit off, the timeline stops mattering.
What if the smell is coming from the electrical panel itself?
Treat that as the more serious version. The panel carries every circuit in the house, so heat there is not confined to one room, and the connections inside it handle far more current than any single outlet. Switch off the main breaker if you can reach it safely, keep people away from the panel, and call. Do not open the cover to look, because the terminals behind it stay live even with the main off. This is also worth knowing if your panel is a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or a Zinsco: those brands are documented to fail without tripping, so heat can build with no breaker ever reacting.
My smoke alarm never went off. Does that mean it is not serious?
No. A smoke alarm needs smoke particles in the air in enough quantity to trigger it, and an overheating connection inside a wall or a box can cook for a long time without producing that. Your nose is considerably more sensitive to the early breakdown products than an alarm is to the late ones. A silent smoke alarm is genuinely good news about right now, but it is not evidence that nothing is wrong, and it should not be the reason you restore the circuit.
