Why your lights keep flickering
Most flickering in a modern home is a dimmer arguing with an LED bulb, and it is harmless. A smaller share is a connection arcing, which is how electrical fires start. The two look identical from across the room, so this is about telling them apart.
Flickering means one of two things
Almost every flicker falls into one of two categories, and they could not be further apart in consequence.
The first is a bulb and a dimmer that do not get along. This is the common one by a wide margin in any home that has swapped incandescent bulbs for LEDs, which is most of them by now. Nothing is wrong with the wiring, nothing is degrading, and nothing is going to catch fire. It is two components with mismatched expectations.
The second is a connection that has gone loose and is arcing. Current that should flow through solid metal contact is jumping a tiny gap instead, and every jump releases heat inside a box or a wall cavity where there is nowhere for it to go. That is a genuine fire risk and it does not improve on its own.
We would rather tell you plainly that the common case is usually nothing than treat every flicker as an emergency. A page that cries wolf about a shimmering dimmer is a page nobody believes later, and the arcing section further down is the one where being believed matters.
What flickers, and when
Two questions separate the harmless from the serious, and neither requires a tool. How much flickers: one bulb, one room, or the whole house. And when it flickers: at random, at low dimmer settings, or at the moment a large appliance starts.
One bulb on a dimmer is a component problem. Several lights together means they share a connection, and that connection is the suspect. The whole house at once means the cause sits upstream of every circuit you have. Work the check below, or read the same logic in the table under it.

Changing a bulb and reading what is printed on a dimmer is normal homeowner territory. Opening a switch, a fixture, or the panel is not, and nothing on this page asks you to. This is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

When it is the bulb and the dimmer
Start here, because this is where most flickering ends. All four steps are free or nearly free, and none of them involves opening anything.
The reason this became so common is worth understanding. A dimmer does not reduce voltage smoothly; it switches the power on and off many times per second and varies how long it stays on. Older dimmers were designed around incandescent bulbs, which draw a great deal of current and whose filaments glow through the gaps without the eye noticing. An LED draws a small fraction of that current and responds instantly, so it has neither the load the dimmer needs to switch cleanly nor the thermal lag that used to hide the switching. The result is visible flicker, normally worst at the low end of the dial.
Read what the bulb box actually says
A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer switch will flicker and often buzz, every time, forever. It is not a fault and no amount of rewiring fixes it. The bulb has to say dimmable, and the ones that do not are not marked clearly on the bulb itself, only on the packaging.
Reseat the bulb once it is cool
Turn the light off, give it a few minutes, then take the bulb out and put it back firmly. A bulb sitting a fraction loose makes intermittent contact, which looks exactly like a wiring problem and costs nothing to rule out.
Try a different bulb you know works
Swap in a bulb from a fixture that has never flickered. If the flicker follows the bulb, you are done. If the flicker stays with the fixture, the problem is the fixture or what feeds it, and that is worth a closer look.
Check what the dimmer is rated for
Dimmers made before LED bulbs were common need a minimum load to run steadily, and a few LEDs together often do not reach it. An LED-rated dimmer is an inexpensive part and it resolves the majority of these. If you are mixing dimmable LEDs from different brands on one dimmer, that alone can cause it too.
If a dimmable, correctly seated, known-good bulb still flickers on an LED-rated dimmer, you have ruled out the entire common case. That is genuinely useful, and it moves the search to the next section.
When it is a connection arcing
This is the version that matters, and the giveaway is that more than one light is involved.
Lights that flicker together share something: a circuit, a switch that feeds several fixtures, or a junction box the run passes through. A single connection that has worked loose at that shared point interrupts the flow for a fraction of a second at a time, and every light past it flickers in unison. The same failure that makes a run of outlets go dead makes a run of lights flicker, caught at an earlier stage.
The mechanism is what makes it serious. A loose connection does not simply pass less current. Current jumps the gap, and each jump is a small arc that releases heat directly into the terminal, the device, and the box around it. That heat degrades the connection further, which widens the gap, which increases the arcing. It is a process that accelerates rather than settling down, and it happens inside a wall where nobody sees the early stages.
Loosening connections are common in homes of a certain age across Santa Clara County, and there are two specific reasons a house might be prone to it: push-in connections on the backs of devices, which rely on a small spring contact that relaxes over decades, and aluminum branch wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s, which expands and contracts more than copper and loosens faster as a result.
Finding a loose connection means opening devices along the run and testing them in order. It is not difficult work for someone with the right tools, and it is not homeowner work.
When the whole house does it
Whole-house flickering splits cleanly in two depending on whether you can predict when it happens.
If it happens the moment something large starts up, an air conditioner, a dryer, a well pump, that is mostly ordinary. Motors pull a heavy surge for an instant as they get moving, and that surge briefly drags voltage down everywhere. A quick dip that snaps back is normal behavior, especially in an older home. Keep an eye on whether it is getting worse: a dip that has grown more noticeable over the years, or that lingers instead of recovering immediately, suggests the service is undersized for how the house is used now.
If it happens at random, with no appliance to blame, the cause sits upstream of all your circuits: a loose connection at the panel or in the service, or an open neutral. Before calling anyone, do one free check that decides who is even responsible. Ask a neighbor whether their lights are doing it too. A whole street flickering is a utility problem and they will repair it at no cost to you. Your house alone is on your side of the meter.
Lights that brighten, not just dim
Dimming has plenty of harmless explanations. Brightening does not.
A light that gets noticeably brighter than normal means the voltage on that circuit has climbed above where it should sit, and the usual reason is an open neutral upstream. Without a solid neutral connection, the two halves of your electrical service stop holding a steady reference against each other and the voltage swings according to whatever happens to be running, high on one side and low on the other.
The damage is invisible and continuous. Sustained overvoltage kills electronics, appliance control boards, and LED drivers for as long as the fault is present, often well before anyone connects it to the flickering. If your lights brighten as well as dim, this is a today problem, not a weekend one.
Signs that mean stop immediately
Turn that circuit off and call if you see any of these
- A burning smell, or the smell of hot plastic, near a switch, a fixture, or the panel
- A switch, faceplate, or dimmer that is warm or hot to the touch
- Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling from a switch, a fixture, or inside a wall
- Scorch marks, browning, or discoloration around a switch or a faceplate
- Lights that brighten as well as dim, especially when large appliances cycle
- Flickering that started suddenly across the whole house with nothing else changed
Every item on that list is heat, sound, or smell, and each one means the flicker has company. A flicker on its own is usually a bulb. A flicker with any of these beside it is a connection failing while it is still carrying current, and that is the point where troubleshooting stops.

Common questions
Are flickering lights dangerous, or am I overreacting?
Most flickering is not dangerous. In homes that have switched to LED bulbs, the majority of it comes down to a dimmer that was never designed for the load an LED presents, and that is a bulb-and-switch problem rather than a wiring one. What separates the harmless kind from the serious kind is company: flickering by itself is usually nothing, while flickering alongside a burning smell, a warm faceplate, buzzing, or scorch marks means a connection is arcing and needs attention that day.
Why did my lights start flickering right after I switched to LED bulbs?
Because the dimmer did not change when the bulb did. Older dimmers were built for incandescent bulbs, which draw a lot of current, and they rely on that load to operate smoothly. An LED drawing a small fraction of it can leave the dimmer below the threshold it needs, so it misfires and you see flicker or shimmer, usually worst at low brightness. An LED-rated dimmer normally ends it. It is worth confirming the bulbs say dimmable first, since a non-dimmable LED will flicker on any dimmer.
What does it mean when several lights in different rooms flicker together?
It means they share something, and the shared thing is where the problem is. Lights that flicker in unison are usually on the same circuit, fed through the same switch, or passing through the same junction box, and one loose connection at that shared point makes all of them flicker at once. This version deserves more attention than a single fixture, because a loose connection carrying current is arcing whether or not anything smells hot yet.
My lights dip for a second when the AC or dryer starts. Is that a problem?
On its own, usually not. Motors draw a large surge in the instant they start, and that surge pulls the voltage down very briefly across the whole house. A quick dip that recovers immediately is ordinary, particularly in an older home. What is worth acting on is a dip that has become more noticeable over time, one that lingers rather than snapping back, or one that makes lights visibly drop. That suggests the service is undersized for the way the house is used now, or that a connection at the panel or the service has loosened.
Is the flickering my problem or the utility company problem?
The quickest way to find out costs nothing: ask a neighbor whether their lights are doing it too. If several homes on the street are flickering, the fault is on the utility side and they will repair it. If it is only your house, it is on your side of the meter and it is our work. It is worth doing that check before anything else when the flickering is house-wide and appeared suddenly, because it decides who you should be calling.
Can flickering lights actually start a fire?
The flickering itself cannot, but what causes some flickering can. When a connection is loose, current jumps the small gap instead of flowing through solid contact, and every jump throws off heat in a confined space with nowhere to shed it. That is arcing, and it is a leading cause of electrical fires in walls and boxes. This is why a flicker paired with heat, smell, or sound is treated differently from a flicker on its own: the second one is a bulb, the first one is a connection failing while it is still carrying current.
Why do my lights brighten sometimes instead of only dimming?
Treat brightening as the more urgent of the two. Dimming has many harmless explanations, but lights getting brighter than normal means the voltage on that circuit has risen above where it should sit, which usually points at an open neutral upstream of everything.
